Julie Cutting

Inspiration is so precious, it comes when you least expect it. My first memories…I used to lay in the grass looking at the clouds making pictures in my mind. I would look for shapes, colors, similarities and I would use my imagination and envision beautiful pictures, shapes, animals and people.

I adored getting that new box of crayons on the first day of school, excited about the journey of creating I would soon embrace; the choice of colors, the combinations, and the creativity of it all was left up to me and my new box of crayons. As an artist, these were my beginnings. I felt like I always viewed the world differently; seeing the world in black and white as well as in vivid color. The tools I learned as a little girl empowered me to make magic on a canvas, I always painted outside the lines.

In fourth and fifth grade I took painting lessons from our hometown, delightful art teacher Ms. Day. She inspired me to become the artist that I am today. With her little sayings of encouragement like “that’s the ticket,” and “now you’re cooking with gas,” I heartily believe that her faith and encouragement helped me blossom as an artist.

Throughout my life, I have continued to embrace art in so many ways; from decorating my home and gardening, to wrapping beautiful presents and the unique personal-style I have curated. I seize any opportunity I have to see the beautiful world we live in and settle it on a canvas.

I have a bachelor’s degree from Colorado State University in Physical Education and a Master’s degree from the University of Colorado in Reading and Curriculum and Instruction. I have been an elementary teacher for 30 years.

My work is evolving and blossoming like the flowers I cultivate in my garden. My work varies from landscapes to florals and dog portraits. Recently I have been exploring in the realm of plein air painting. The temporal quality of the material, alluding to the passage of seasons, light and the nature of the material itself all speak to me to create.
