The new gate is in and is already getting a lot of attention. You can see the old fence behind it that will be removed very quickly. It has blown its gate off their screws during high winds, there’s a vortex between the brick walls that turns high winds into tornados 😉
Built by Sean Huffman, the hardest-working man in Victor, has built the Victor signs, all the railings around town, the Miner’s Union Hall sign, the wrought iron gates in front of Kat’s Liquors, the gate at my house and countless more. His stepson Tanner works with him also. He was able to use the bricks left over from the Union Hall (after its lightning strike and fire), and I added one historic brick from my house that’s stamped the “Denver Fire Company”.
I asked him if this was the most difficult project he’s had and he said “Yes, I’ve built skyscrapers that were easier than this”!
Next comes the old railroad ties that will turn into planters to make a Victorian garden behind the gate. South Fourth Street has turned into quite a showpiece. I’m sure it will make people wonder “what in the world is behind that gate?” It is definitely one of a kind, and a lot of people contributed their ideas and color preferences. It was Sean’s idea to add the columbines, which I heartily agree with since it’s our State’s flower.
